OUR COUNTRY: NAPURRUŊ WÄŊA / MELA KANTRI / NGANAMPA NGURA / GAMERREM
——
It’s the final weekend to visit one of our most ambitious exhibitions to date ‘Our Country’— a curatorial collaboration between Brunswick Street Gallery and artist/curator Karen Rogers from Ngukurr Arts.

Karen Rogers is a multi-year finalist in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards (NATSIAA), Indigenous arts worker, printmaker, animator, filmmaker, textile designer and a senior leader within her remote community of Ngukurr, South East Arnhem Land. 'Our Country', the concept for which was developed by Rogers, will be her first major curatorial project in Victoria, and the first to involve multiple remote Indigenous art centres from across the Top End and Central Desert region.

‘Sambala main atwek im bla dis kantri we ai bin grouap. Im bla mela laif la Roper en bla mela koltja.

My artwork often shows the country where I grew up. It’s inspired by our life in Ngukurr and our culture.’

– Karen Rogers, co-curator.
——
‘Our Country’ presents artists from five remote Indigenous art centres and their personal response to 'Country', what it means, and how it shapes identity and their art. ‘Our Country’ showcases the work of artists Aaron Pei Pie, Gordon Barney, Ishmael Marika, Jill Daniels, Judy Manany, Karen Rogers, Megan Yunupingu and Patrina Munuŋgurr from leading Art Centres: Buku- Larrŋgay Mulka Centre (NT), Elcho Island Arts (NT), Ngukurr Arts (NT), Tjarlirli & Kaltukatjara Art (NT & WA) and Warmun Art Centre (WA).

We were delighted to welcome Karen to Melbourne to launch ‘Our Country’, and look forward to future curatorial projects with her.
