Posted @withregram • @artguideau If you’re in Adelaide this summer you can be fortunate enough to glimpse Gwenneth Blitner’s brilliant, blooming paintings. The vividly colourful flower and landscape paintings of Blitner, showing for Tarnanthi at the Art Gallery of South Australia over January, not only convey connection to Country, but the joy of painting itself.

Born and living in Ngukurr, a remote Aboriginal community on the banks of Roper River in southern Arnhem Land—formerly known as Roper River Mission—the 62-year-old paints from a place of happiness because, as she says, it “feels right”.

Such an impulse is wildly evident in the images she creates, where the delicate grouping of flowers—a reoccurring motif in her work—bursts with blissful energy. Blitner thinks about Country while painting, replicating her Marra, Nunggubuyu environment with a dazzling beauty that reveals multiple layers of landscape; red deserts, rocky escarpments, gorges, rivers and waterfalls. Yet Blitner also breaks through the standardised conception of Arnhem Land, bringing wildflowers and billabongs to the forefront. In paintings that overflow with colour, Blitner offers new ways of thinking about remote desert areas. Her memories of Country are full of bush flowers reminding her, as she tells us, “how important land is”.

Karen lives in Ngukurr with her family and started working at Ngukurr Arts in 2013.

Before working at the Art Centre, Karen studied at the Bachelor Institute, and completed her Cert IV in Visual Arts and Cert IV in Business management. As an Arts Administrator, Karen helps run the gallery and studio with key roles in administration and retail.

Karen uploads details of artworks into the SAM (Stories Art Money) database ensuring the Art Centre catalogue is up to date and that each artwork has a Certificate of Authenticity. Karen is also the resident screen printer and creates and prints all designs herself using stencils and rollers.

During AWEP Karen learnt more about how to use the iPad for her day-to-day work. Karen also benefitted from the conservation workshops and can pass that knowledge on to others to make sure important artwork and cultural artefacts can be looked after for future generations.

Karen is a graduate of the 2020-21 ANKA Art Worker Extension Foundation Program (AWEP Foundation Program). This program is ANKAs flagship professional development initiative, which aims to produce 100 graduates by the end of 2025.
